Horse Hauler Insurance: What You Need

Insurance is one of the most important parts of running a horse transport business. It protects you, your business, and your clients if something goes wrong. Here’s a breakdown of the types of insurance you should have.

1. Commercial Auto Insurance

Your personal auto policy won’t cover you if you’re transporting horses for money. You need a commercial auto policy that covers your truck and trailer.

Make sure it includes:

  • Collision and liability

  • Trailer coverage

  • Roadside assistance (optional but helpful)

2. Cargo Insurance for Horses

Horses are live cargo. You need cargo insurance that covers live animals in case of injury or death during transport. Standard cargo policies often exclude livestock, so ask specifically for equine coverage.

Typical limits range from $5,000 to $100,000 per horse, depending on client expectations.

3. General Liability Insurance

This protects you from claims that aren’t related to vehicle accidents, such as:

  • A horse getting injured while loading

  • Property damage at a pickup location

It’s a separate policy and important for full protection.

4. Care, Custody, and Control (CCC)

Some insurers offer CCC coverage for horse haulers. It protects you if a horse in your care is injured or dies and you’re found responsible. This is sometimes bundled with general liability or available as an add-on.

5. Workers’ Comp (if hiring help)

If you hire drivers or help with loading/unloading, you may need workers’ compensation insurance. This varies by state and business structure.

6. Keep Proof On Hand

Always keep digital and physical copies of your insurance documents in your truck. Clients may ask to see them, and they’re required during DOT inspections.

Having the right insurance shows you’re serious, prepared, and trustworthy. It also helps protect you from the financial risks of the job.
